![]() Your fears about turning 40 will fall by the wayside when you weigh the positives against the perceived negatives – this article helps you do so. What is it about aging that scares people so much? Is it the fear of becoming infirm and a burden to others? Most often, the fear stems from losing one’s good looks and vitality. But whether one becomes old at age 40 or not, is a matter of adjusting one’s attitude towards it. We address some secret fears you may have about turning 40, and how you can turn these qualms into positives instead: #1 ‘I look old!’ By the time you turn 40, your skin admittedly goes through several changes. You will have developed fine lines, age spots and sagging. But there is no reason that you should continue to look old. Ask your dermatologist to recommend a practical anti-aging skin care routine that takes into account your lifestyle and how much time you have on your hands. Now is a good time to start using anti-aging skin care products, as well as go for regular clean-ups and hydrating facials to restore the skin’s moisture and elasticity. #2 ‘I am past my prime.’ Society dictates that only those in their 20s are young, and anyone past the age of 30 years is ‘over the hill’. Don’t listen to people who tell you that you are too old to wear what you want, or do what you like. You cannot be shackled by age-wise prescribed behaviour, and there’s no such thing as ‘too old’. In fact, you are in an enviable position at age 40: you have enough life experience to be more comfortable about yourself, and you are still years away from retirement. In fact, your confidence and body positivity can be a source of inspiration for younger women. #3 I am not attractive any more. Another wrong notion that society conditions us to believe in, is that a woman at age 30 may be reasonably attractive, but a woman past the age of 40 is on the opposite end of the spectrum. This is complete rubbish: you are as attractive as you feel, whatever your age. But it doesn’t hurt to increase your confidence by dressing up in stylish clothes, buying new make-up and perfume, getting a glamourous haircut, and generally being the belle of any ball! It’s not your looks, but your confidence that is your most attractive trait, and everybody will pick up on it. #4 I am about to develop many health problems. The 50s and 60s are the decades when there are a lot of health issues you might have to battle. But the 40s are when the seeds of these health problems are actually sown. Apart from investing in anti-aging skin care, do take the time out to get regular health check-ups done. It is also a good idea to exercise regularly to keep away excess weight and all the health issues associated with it. Learn to meditate to keep stress levels down, keep your skin and hair clean and healthy, indulge in exercise to have a fit body, and make the time for hobbies and recreation. Collectively, these will keep future health issues at bay for a longer time.
