Your skin treads a fine line between good health and disorders. We list the 7 common skin ailments and what to do about them.
Your skin reflects the inner workings of the body. Every pimple, wart, rash or patch indicates a disturbance in some part of the body or another. There are scores of skin illnesses and infections – we list the 7 most common ones: 1 Skin pigmentation. It is caused by a disturbance in the skin’s cells that produce melanin, a pigment that gives skin its colour. Melanin may be produced in clumps, which causes dark patches on the skin. Or it may be produced less in certain areas of the skin, causing lighter patches. The treatment plan often involves correcting the lifestyle, eating a nutritious diet, and a course of medication to correct the skin cells. 2 Acne. Acne is often caused by the skin’s inability to repair and cleanse itself. A variety of factors can cause or aggravate acne: aging, strong sunlight, poor diet, stress, lack of sleep, a disturbance in the skin’s repair routine, lack of hydration, accumulation of toxins in the skin, etc. It can be treated by drinking lots of water, having a diet rich in raw fruit and vegetables, and using dermatologist-recommended creams. 3 Warts. Warts are upraised growths caused by the spread of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that lives on human skin. The HPV can grow in response to high stress, poor skin health, reduced immunity owing to illness, etc. It forms a wart which may generally be harmless and recede on its own. Other types of warts are hard or painful to the touch. Warts treatment generally tries to dry out the virus causing the wart, thus making the wart disappear. Regular warts treatment may be prescribed for recurring growths. 4 Candidiasis. This is a condition caused by an uncontrolled growth of the Candida Albicans fungus on the skin. The fungus is normally present in small proportions, but its spread may be triggered by medication, allergies, a diet rich in sugar, etc. It can cause patches in the folds of the skin, and in some cases, yeast infections that affect the digestion, genital health and skin health. It must be treated with a combination of yeast-inhibiting drugs and a diet free of processed sugar and carbs. 5 Cold sores. It is a reddish blister that is found near the mouth. It may be filled with fluid and painful to the touch. The skin may feel inflamed or sore before the sore is formed at the site. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus which has no known cure as yet. A combination of inhibiting creams and tablets may dry out the virus and make the sore disappear. However, they may return at another point in time. 6 Athlete’s foot. This is a skin condition is characterised by dry or soggy skin in the webbing between the toes. It may also spread to the rest of the foot. It is caused by a sudden increase in the fungus present on the skin, and is exacerbated by wearing wet socks, exposure to damp floors, and overall poor foot hygiene. It can cause itching and rashes, but is fairly easy to treat with antifungal powders and keeping the feet dry. It is best to avoid communal swimming pools, showers and changing areas till the condition clears. 7 Hives. These are itchy patches or welts formed on the skin which are reddish in colour and which come and go quite rapidly. They are often caused by an allergic reaction to external factors, though it is common among people who are unable to handle stress. Other factors include tight clothes that constrict blood circulation, and certain illnesses. The dermatologist will prescribe antihistamines to treat hives.
