We explain what happens when your skin is deprived of sleep and water on a daily basis. Who would have thought that two free things in life – water and sleep – are most important for your health? A lack of both spells disaster for your skin, hair and overall fitness. Here’s how they cause many skin problems: 1 A reduced glow. Lack of sleep interferes with the skin’s nightly restoration process. While you sleep, the skin, brain and major organs of the body replenish dead cells and build new ones. However, deep undisturbed sleep for about seven to eight hours is important for this process to take place. Lack of good quality sleep inhibits it, resulting in tired skin the next morning. 2 Premature aging. Water and undisturbed sleep are essential for the skin to rebuild itself. When the skin does not receive both, it becomes thin, damaged and prone to aging. If you notice signs of premature aging such as wrinkles, age spots and fine lines, it means that the skin problems are at the tissue level. Try hydrating the skin more by drinking lots of water, and get good sleep for at least seven hours a night to see the difference in your complexion. 3 Development of dark circles. Another side effect of poor sleep is the sight of bluish circles around the eyes. The dark circles are caused when the skin does not receive enough hydration, and the fine blood vessels in the skin around the eyes get further inflamed due to a lack of sleep. Those who frequently sleep late, or who pull all-nighters at work, or who do not drink enough water during the day, are most prone to dark circles. 4 Your electronic gadgets harm your skin. You might ruin your sleep by staring into your mobile phone or e-reader late into the night. The ambient light from these gadgets tricks the brain into believing that it is daylight, and hence, it wires the brain to avoid sleep. Meanwhile, the light from these gadgets changes the skin’s cellular structure and causes damage. 5 Acne and pimple breakouts. Lack of moisture in the skin is the primary reason why the skin cannot cleanse itself and remove the toxins adequately. The skin responds to the dryness by excreting extra amounts of sebum – but this makes the skin oilier and more prone to attracting dust and grime. Soon, the skin develops pimples and acne. These skin problem are further compounded by lack of sleep. 6 Products interfere with skin repair. Many women slather moisturiser on their skin before they sleep. While moisturiser is certainly essential for the skin, applying it in a thick layer blocks the skin from carrying out its cellular restoration. It also does not allow the skin to breathe, and contributes to acne breakouts. If you want to use a skin restorative serum, ask your dermatologist to recommend one that is specially designed to work in tandem with sleep. 7 Build-up of toxins. Lack of sleep and inadequate water intake can stress your skin and interfere with its natural healing processes. Lack of water intake also results in the skin being unable to produce much sweat – sweat is essential for helping the skin eliminate toxins and other waste matter. So the toxins continue to accumulate and cause skin problems like oxidation, premature aging and dryness.
