Your skin cells tell their own story of damage and aging. We tell you what the four major signs of skin aging look like.
Your skin is the mirror that tells the world about the kind of health you are in. If it is plump and rosy, it means that your skin is well cared for. But if it is spotted, sallow and lined, it means that it is aging. Here’s how to interpret the signals your skin is sending you: Hyperpigmentation or sun spots. The harsh sunlight can be quite damaging for your skin. It damages the delicate skin cells, and starts the process of aging even when one is in their 20s. What is worse, these sun-damaged cells sit in the skin’s inner layers before they finally begin to make their way up to the surface. When they arrive, they mark the skin with hyperpigmentation or spots. These are usually quite light in colour and you may not immediately notice them, but your dermatologist will. They are a sure sign that skin aging has begun, and that you need to take quick steps to retard their progress. Crow’s feet. These are lines on the outer corners of your eyes, and they are accentuated when you smile or laugh. The lines are formed due to sun exposure, improper skin hygiene and pollution, which together create destructive free radicals. These free radicals attack the moisture content and collagen in the skin, which is the substance that keeps the skin supple and smooth. With the collagen destroyed, the skin begins to dry out and develops lines, because the skin is not as hydrated as before. The crow’s feet can be removed with a good anti-aging treatment before they deepen into permanent wrinkles. Fine lines. These are a sure giveaway that aging is setting in the skin. They mostly develop around areas of most pressure on the skin, such as around the mouth, the forehead, the eyes, and the neck. Fine lines are a symptom of lack of moisture in the skin. Lack of hydration can cause the skin to dry out and develop lines, which later deepen into wrinkles. The fine lines can be treated with good anti-aging treatments that reverse the signs of aging. Make sure to use moisturiser every day, drink a lot of water and limit your intake of alcohol, caffeine and sugar to halt the progress of fine lines. Dullness. Dull, lifeless skin is usually associated with old age, but a surprisingly high number of younger women also sport dull skin. Dullness is caused by a variety of factors – poor skin hygiene, lack of moisturisation, aging that slows down the process of cell renewal, and sun damage. Apart from wearing a lot of sunscreen lotion every day, you can drink a lot of water, get seven hours of sleep every night and exercise daily. If your skin is still dull, you can use glycolic peels or schedule a session of microdermabrasion.
