![]() Warts are ugly and mostly harmless. We explain what causes them and the correct wart treatment that can fend them off. You take great pride in your appearance, use the best skin care products and take pains to exercise and follow a healthy diet. But despite all your efforts, there is one problem that rears its ugly head again and again – that of warts on your skin. Try as you might, your skin keeps developing warts on and off. The wart may grow on any part of the skin, whether on the face or on the limbs, or the torso. Wherever the wart may be located, it is always clearly visible and it has a detrimental effect on your morale. It arrests the attention at once, and it is often the first thing anybody sees. So you are understandably annoyed about developing warts. The question is, why do they occur in the first place? Understanding why they occur can help you seek the right kind of wart treatment. Why your skin gets warts The human skin harbours a harmless virus known as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV is present on the skin in minute amounts. It shows no symptoms at first. But the HPV may suddenly increase in proportion, if your immunity is low or if you consume certain kinds of medication for an illness. The increased incidence of HPV on the skin results in warts. The HPV is also known to proliferate quickly if the skin’s cellular structure undergoes a modification due to hormonal imbalances or prolonged consumption of antibiotics. The wart grows when the HPV spreads in a certain localised area of the skin. Warts are relatively harmless and most of them are painless. Some may even disappear over time if the HPV is treated by an expert dermatologist. But you may need to seek prolonged wart treatment or seek a full body scan if the wart is sore to the touch, painful, oozing pus or inflamed and bloody. Wart treatment – the next course of action If you are prone to recurring warts, or if a wart on the body is painful or bloody, then you must seek immediate wart treatment. A good dermatologist can offer a range of solutions so that the wart may be removed and may not recur. If the wart is painless and soft, then even simple home remedies that dry out the HPV can help. These involve exposing the wart to acidic substances like lemon juice or tomato pulp to dry out and kill the HPV. But do remember that every wart takes a long time to die out completely, so patience is key. At the same time, do not try any wart treatment at home, especially if it involves slicing off or fomenting the wart by yourself. Leave the wart treatment to your dermatologist, who can examine it and recommend the right course of treatment.
